Blue Idol and Coolham Airfield

Written by: | | Activity:

On 22 April, some 17 members (including wives) met at the Quaker Meeting House known as 'Blue Idol' (built circa 1580 and bought in 1691), where we learnt of the early days of the Quaker movement and the Horsham connection to William Penn, an early leader. We also learnt that Pennsylvania was named in honour of Penn's Father, a Vice-Admiral of the navy.

From there, we retired to The Selsey Arms hostelry and enjoyed an interesting talk by Richard Harris on the history of the Coolham advanced landing ground (ALG) and the exploits of the two Polish squadrons of P-51C Mustang Mk.III fighters based there between April and June 1944 for operations related to D-Day.

After an excellent lunch, Richard guided us around the site of the ALG, one of the Horsham Heritage Trails. Thanks to Tony Turner for organising the trip.
